SURAT: Maharashtra police seized Rs 1.33 crore in cash from an iron trunk belonging to six passengers travelling in a Surat-bound Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) bus at Dhulia on Wednesday. Police seized the trunk when they did not receive any satisfactory reply from its owners, who were taken into custody. However, the police officials in Surat said they know nothing of the incident.
The GSRTC bus, which started from Akola in Maharashtra, was checked by the police at Dhulia bus stand. A trunk was found in the rear of the bus and when it was checked cash was found in it. A total Rs 1.33 crore in cash was found in the trunk. When trunk owners were questioned about it, they could not give a satisfactory reply which made the Dhulia police to seize the whole amount. The six persons, who were carrying the trunk, were arrested and their interrogation is on.
The amount, hawala money of an angadia operator, was reportedly to be delivered in Surat.
"Maharashtra police have not informed us of any such incident," said JM Patel, DCB and BR Chauhan, Mahidharpura police inspector.
Police sources said as it seemed to be unaccounted money, there is all probability of IB and income tax department too joining the ongoing probe. Local market sources said of the trunk carriers, three are from Surat and three belong to Mehsana. They have been identified as Babu Thakur, 40, Mehsana,
Mehul Patel, 19, of Surat, Ganda Patel, 49, Pandesara, Surat, Sachin Patel, 21, Mehsana, Jeetendra Patel, 22, Mehsana and Sandeep Patel, 22, of Surat.
Dhulia city police inspector GJ Patil, who is investigating the case, said, "We will find out the source of the money."
