30-year-old woman jumps to death on court campus
Surat: A 30-year-old woman jumped to her death from ninth floor of Surat District and Sessions Court building here on Saturday afternoon. She sustained serious injuries and was shifted to New Civil Hospital (NCH) but died on way.
The woman was identified as Simpi Singh Rajput. Her pair of slippers, mobile phone and other belongings were found near the window of the ninth floor of the building from where she jumped. It is suspected that she had committed suicide. Police have registered a case of accidental death and begun investigations to find out the exact reason behind her suicide.
A huge crowd of lawyers and visitors to the court gathered at the spot where the woman lay in a pool of blood. EMRI ambulance service 108 arrived at the spot within minutes and the paramedics when examined the woman could feel her pulse. Her videos and photos clicked by onlookers went viral on social media.
The woman had lodged complaints of domestic violence and harassment for dowry against husband Vijay and eight other members of her in-laws’ family at Limbayat police station in 2017. Vijay is an employee of a bank and the couple’s families belonged to Uttar Pradesh. The couple got married in 2015 and soon the demand for dowry started, family members of the deceased alleged. There was an attempt by in-laws of the deceased to poison her a few days after the marriage, a relative alleged.
Simpi Singh Rajput had come to the court campus in connection with hearing of one the cases when she took the extreme step after talking to someone over phone.
“We are yet to find out the exact reason for her suicide. We will question family members once the woman’s last rites are over,” police said.
