SURAT: A 16-year-old boy died by suicide on Thursday, his birthday, in the Bhestan area of Surat. He hanged himself when his parents went out to buy his birthday cake for the evening celebration. Dindoli police registered an accidental death and began an investigation.
Ashutosh Pradhan, the victim, studied in Class 9 at an Udhna school and lived with his parents and sister in the Vijayalaxmi Nagar area of Bhestan. He received birthday wishes from relatives and friends throughout the morning.
In the evening, his parents went out to buy the cake. On their return, they discovered Ashutosh hanging from a curtain rod in the house. On hearing the couple's screams, neighbours rushed to the scene and called the police. Dindoli police took Ashutosh to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Ashutosh's father, originally from Odisha, works in a local factory. His sister, a nurse, was at work when he hanged himself.
"We registered an accidental death and started an investigation. The family is in shock, and we haven't yet taken their statements. We are investigating if a family member scolded him over something. We are also investigating if he had demanded any gift that the family was unable to provide," an investigator said.
