SRINAGAR: There was some relief from the cold wave in Kashmir, but the temperatures remained below freezing point.
The Gulmarg skiing resort in north Kashmir recorded a temperature of minus 7.0 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir, the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, experienced a low of minus 8.6 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in the valley.
Kokernag and Qazigund towns in south Kashmir recorded temperatures of minus 3.7 degrees Celsius and minus 5.8 degrees Celsius respectively.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, had a low of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius. These temperatures were around four degrees below normal for this time of the year.
Despite the end of the 40-day harshest winter period known as 'Chilla-i-Kalan', the cold wave persists in Kashmir.
The valley is currently in a 20-day-long 'Chilla-i-Khurd' (small cold) period, which will be followed by a 10-day 'Chilla-i-Bachha' (baby cold) period.
