SHIMLA: After nearly two days of high drama and internal tug of war in the Himachal Pradesh Congress, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in its meeting on Saturday evening selected Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu (58) as the party’s leader. He will be the 15th chief minister of Himachal Pradesh while Mukesh Agnihotri (60) will be the deputy chief minister.

Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel announced the decision of the CLP in the meeting. This is the first time in Congress that the chief ministerial post has gone to lower Himachal Pradesh as all past chief ministers have been from Shimla and Sirmaur districts. When the final decision on the chief minister was being taken in the CLP meeting, the supporters of state president Pratibha Singh were creating a ruckus outside the venue demanding that the high command make her the chief minister.

Baghel said that CLP on Friday had passed a single-line resolution authorising the Congress high command to select the chief minister and the high command had selected Sukhu for the top post and Mukesh Agnihotri as the deputy chief minister. Sukhu is a fourth-time MLA from Naudaun seat of Hamirpur district while Mukesh Agnihotri has been elected MLA from Haorli constituency of Una district for the fifth time and had remained a minister.
