Sukhu clarifies after BJP slams ‘jungli murga’ video

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh BJP on Saturday condemned chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu after a video went viral on social media, in which he is seen suggesting serving the protected species 'jungli murga' (grey junglefowl) to a minister and others during dinner. The video shows Sukhu during his night stay on Friday in Tikkar village in Kupvi tehsil of Shimla district.Highlighting that there are provisions for imprisonment and fines for hunting and eating ‘jungli murga’, the leader of opposition, Jai Ram Thakur, accused Sukhu of not only allowing the ‘jungli murga’ dish to be mentioned on the dinner menu but also encouraging his associates to consume it. In the viral video, the chief minister could be heard saying, “Inko do jungli murga, hamain thodi khana hai (give them jungli murga, I don’t want to eat).” He then asks his associates, including health and family welfare minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil (retd), if they wish to eat the ‘jungli murga’.Later, on Saturday, the chief minister told media persons that eating non-vegetarian food is a way of life in the hills. He clarified that the villagers in Tikkar had cooked ‘desi murga’ (country chicken). Sukhu slammed the leader of opposition for making an unnecessary issue out of it. Later in the evening, the leader of opposition said the ‘jungli murga’ that the CM was passionately serving to his associates and minister at night turned into a “desi murga” by morning. “The incident that occurred on Friday night in Kupvi was broadcast live for the world to see,” he said.
