KULLU: Wednesday’s snowfall and rain in Himachal Pradesh blocked 117 roads, including three national highways, while hundreds of villages lost power and water supply.

The state disaster management authority (SDMA) counted 139 distribution transformer regions (DTRs) and 10 water supply schemes as being affected. Lahaul-Spiti district and the higher regions of Kullu, Kangra, Chamba, Kinnaur, Mandi, and Shimla received snowfall on Tuesday and Wednesday. After 106 roads, including the Manali-Leh national highway, were blocked in Lahaul-Spiti, the district police issued an advisory against driving to Dhundi, Atal Tunnel’s north portal, and Sissu.

Heavy snowfall affected six water supply schemes in Lahaul-Spiti. In Chamba, it blocked seven roads and affected four water supply schemes, one of which serving the main town broke down on Tuesday after a landslide at the Sarotha Nala caused a road to sink.

As 40 DTRs in Chamba district lost power link, many villages reported outage. At 71, Sirmaur district had the highest affected DTRs for 24 hours.

Kullu reported outage in 28 DTRs. The weather department has predicted light to moderate rainfall at many places in the low hills and snow at a few places in the middle and high hills on March 2.
