National institute’s team scales HP’s highest peak
SHIMLA: A team of five seasoned mountaineers from National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) at Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh has successfully scaled Mount Reo Purgyil – the highest peak of Himachal Pradesh at 6,819 metres (22,372ft).
Reo Purgyil in Kinnaur is a part of southern Zanskar range and has only three recorded successful summits in the last 50 years. The mountain, due to its extreme technical challenges and tough gradient with a mix of big boulders and snow, is rarely attempted. In the last 10 years, only two expeditions have been launched to the mountain peak without any success. The NIMAS team, under the aegis of “Har Shikhar Tiranga”, had arrived at Nako village in Kinnaur on May 11.
Led by Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal, the team reached the summit on May 22 at 2:50pm in an ambitious push of 18 hours through the terrain covered with snow, ice and rocks.
The other members of the team were havildar Jaypal Singh, naik Debendra, Dorgee Khandu and Tosep Rime. The team members had to carry the entire equipment and ration on manpacks as the late snowfall rendered the path inaccessible to mules.
