Shakdher retires as HP chief justice

Shimla: Justice Rajiv Shakdher demitted the office of the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh high court on Friday on his superannuation. A full court address was held on the high court premises to bid farewell to Justice Shakdher, who had a brief tenure after taking oath as chief justice on Sep 25. Thanking everyone for their support, Justice Shakdher said that judges have no agenda. Their duties, obligations and power are delineated by the Constitution “and a bit of common sense.” He also said that judges have no ideology and their natural instinct is to give a leg-up to the disempowered, the weak and the infirm, the aged and the young, albeit within the four corners of the law.Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, who will be acting Chief Justice of the high court from Saturday onwards, commended the fruitful tenure of Chief Justice Shakdher. The Supreme Court collegium had recommended the appointment of Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia of Punjab and Haryana high court as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh high court after Oct 18. The Centre is yet to issue an official notification in this regard.
