Man who inspired 1857: HP guv hails legacy of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania

Kullu: Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Monday paid tributes to freedom fighter Wazir Ram Singh Pathania and said his legacy would always remain alive in the hearts and minds of the people.Wazir Ram Singh led the first organised armed revolt against British rule in India and inspired the people to stand up against the British army, said the governor.Shukla was at the unveiling ceremony of the statue of Pathania in Nurpur sub-division of Kangra district. He said the name of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania was etched in history as a symbol of courage, patriotism and determination. “Today, we have gathered not only to pay tribute to this great man, but also to revive his legacy, which remains an inspiration for generations,” said Shukla.He said Wazir Ram Singh was more than just a brave warrior. Much before the 1857 revolt, in the year 1848, he led the rebellion in the hilly areas and inspired the people to stand up against the British army. His battle at Shahpur was a testimony to his military prowess and relentless pursuit of freedom for his people. He shook the foundations of the British empire with a handful of companions, said Shukla.The governor said the British conspired and arrested Wazir Ram Singh Pathania and sentenced him to life imprisonment and sent him to Kalapani. Thereafter, he was sent to Rangoon and was subjected to a lot of atrocities. He attained martyrdom on Nov 11, 1849 at the age of just 24 years, he recalled.MPs Rajiv Bhardwaj and Indu Goswami; MLAs Ranveer Singh Nikka, Hansraj and Janak Raj; chairperson of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial Committee Vir Singh; former ministers and other prominent people were also present.
