HP gets Rs 292 cr loan to improve water supply, sewerage services

Shimla: On Friday, in a meeting held at New Delhi, a loan of Rs 292 crore ($40 million) has been approved for Himachal. The development policy loan-1 (DPL1) will be given by the Central government and the World Bank. The loan is to improve

water supply

and sewerage services in Greater Shimla area. Himachal government had negotiated for Rs 986 crore ($135 million).

Following the water crisis during last summer in Shimla, the state government had applied for the loan to put in place the infrastructure required before summer hits the hills again. The loan would enable the Himachal government to take policy-level decisions in institutional reforms, volumetric tariff, water connections, energy efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Additional secretary, department of economic affairs, Union ministry of finance, Sameer Khare, signed the legal and programme agreement on behalf of Government of India, while principal secretary (urban development), Prabodh Saxena, signed the loan agreement and programme agreement on behalf of government of Himachal Pradesh. Country director Junaid Ahmad and team leader Smita Misra represented the World Bank in the meeting.
