Himachal guv visits Atal Tunnel with his wife
Kullu: Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla along with his wife, Janaki, visited Atal Tunnel on Tuesday.
Connecting Lahaul-Spiti with Kullu, the 9km long tunnel named after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the highest highway single-tube tunnel in the world situated at an altitude of more than 10,000ft. Besides promoting tourism, the governor said the tunnel has helped reduce travel time and distance between Manali-Keylong and Leh.
Commanding Officer of BRO, Sandeep Singh, briefed the governor about the escape tunnel which opens after every 400 metres. He said the tunnel bypasses most of the sites, which were prone to road blocks, avalanches and traffic snarls.
Deputy commissioner (Lahaul Spiti) Rahul Kumar, other officials of the district administration and dignitaries welcomed the governor at the north portal of the tunnel. Later, the governor also visited Sissu Lake. He returned to Manali via the Rohtang Pass.
