Manali: Incessant rains in Dhundi region of Manali choked the drainage system of the 9.02km-long Atal tunnel, which resulted in flood-like situation at the south portal of the tunnel on Thursday and Friday.
The water stream that formed a waterfall at the south entrance of the tunnel created panic among the visitors, who were hesitating in entering the tunnel. A small pond was formed at the entry point, and water was seeping from the breast walls also. The tunnel authorities tried to divert the water out of the tunnel by putting some blockages on the road. On Friday, rumours had also spread that Seri nullah is leaking from different places and the tunnel has now become dangerousl. However, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) officials later clarified that it was not the Seri nullah but the drainage system that has failed due to a heavy downpour.
Jitendra Prasad, chief engineer of project Yojak of BRO, said, “The tunnel is completely safe and traffic movement is normal.”
