Ten candidates in Meghalaya poll fray

Shillong: A total of ten candidates — six in Shillong and four in Tura — are in the fray for the April 19 Lok Sabha elections in Meghalaya. The scrutiny of nomination papers was completed on Thursday.Sitting MP Vincent H Pala of Congress is seeking to be re-elected for the fourth consecutive term from the 1-Shillong constituency.

Other candidates vying for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat include state cabinet minister Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh of the National People’s Party (NPP), Ricky Andrew J Syngkon of Voice of the People Party (VPP), Robertjune Kharjahrin of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and two independent candidates — Lakhon Kma and Peter Shallam.While sitting MP Agatha K Sangma of the NPP is seeking a re-election for the third consecutive term from the 2-Tura parliamentary constituency, others contesting for the seat are legislator Saleng Sangma of the Congress, Zenith Sangma of the TMC and Independent candidate Laben Marak.Meanwhile, the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Meghalaya, BDR Tiwari, chaired a meeting on Thursday through video conferencing with officers of multiple departments responsible for conducting the elections. The meeting focused on seizures of cash, alcohol, drugs, freebies during the ongoing Model Code of Conduct in the state.“The districts have informed that the flying squads and the static surveillance teams have already been put in place and assured that vigilance will be enhanced to curb the use of money and alcohol for the smooth conduct of the elections,” an official said.State chief secretary DP Wahlang chaired a meeting with top officials, including DGP Lajja Ram Bishnoi, to address inter-state border and law enforcement concerns with discussions on maintaining peace in border areas and coordinating with the Assam Police.
