Security up along Meghalaya borders

Shillong: The Meghalaya Police and the paramilitary forces have beefed up security along the Meghalaya-Assam inter-state boundary and the international border that the state shares with neighbouring Bangladesh in the run-up to the Lok Sabha election scheduled to be held on April 19.
Meanwhile, in a significant joint operation conducted on Monday, the BSF troops and the Meghalaya Police seized a huge quantity of dry betel nuts from the bordering area of South Garo Hills district.
“BSF troops from the 200 Battalion, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Police, conducted the joint operation near the India-Bangladesh border and seized 4,900 kgs of dry betel nuts worth over Rs 14 lakh from an abandoned house,” a BSF statement stated on Tuesday.
In another operation, Seema Praharis of 172 Battalion of the BSF recovered a stolen bike from Umkiang and arrested a man.
“Later, the bike and the man were handed over to the Dholai police station under the Cachar district of Assam for further investigation,” a BSF statement said.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya govt has declared “dry days” on April 17, 18 and 19.
