Re-examining Meghalaya residents’ safety bill, says CM

Shillong: Chief minister Conrad K Sangma has said the state government is re-examining the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security (Amendment) Bill (MRSSAB), 2020, which has been returned by the ministry of home affairs (MHA).Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Sangma said the MRSSAB is an alternative to the Inner Line Permit (ILP).The Meghalaya legislative assembly had in 2019 unanimously adopted a resolution urging the central government to implement the ILP system in the state to check influx of “outsiders”, but it did not get a concurrence from the governor and was subsequently sent to the President for concurrence. “Back then, the Centre had written back to government of Meghalaya saying that you should revisit it because certain sections were not in line with some constitutional provisions and re-examine how you would rediscuss it,” the chief minister told media persons.“Based on that communication we are now re-examining and speaking to different stakeholders, we are speaking to our legal team and advocate general, we are seeing how we could move on this. It is complicated because we need to look into both the central laws and state laws while we decide on all these aspects, but as I said the process is continuous and we are going to follow it up,” he added. The chief minister also said the state government will convene a meeting with stakeholders to discuss the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) Amendment Bill 2020.

MP says Shinde made chief leader after amending party constitution

The cross-examination of Shiv Sena MLAs in the disqualification case continued, with Rahul Shewale stating that Shinde's appointment as chief leader was made after an amendment to the Shiv Sena constitution. Lawyers from the Uddhav Thackeray faction cross-examined Shewale and questioned him on Shinde's election. During the cross-examination of Shinde faction MLA Yogesh Kadam, the lawyers asked about the expenses for MLAs' tickets and stay. Shinde was appointed after amending the constitution. In addition, Shiv Sena (UBT) lawyers produced an attendance sheet showing 23 MLAs approving the decision to remove Shinde as group leader.
