Prez Murmu to open Meghalaya Games

Shillong: President Droupadi Murmu will embark on a two-day visit to Meghalaya on January 15 and 16, chief minister Conrad K Sangma informed through the social media on Saturday.The president will inaugurate the Meghalaya Games 2023 on January 15 at Tura, headquarters of the West Garo Hills. On January 16, she will open various projects in the state capital. This would be Murmu’s maiden visit to Meghalaya as the President.“Meghalaya Games 2024, Tura, will be historic as Hon’ble President of India, Smti. Droupadi Murmu ji will grace the occasion as chief guest. We look forward to welcoming Hon’ble President to Meghalaya this month on the 15th in Tura and 16th in Shillong,” Sangma said through the social media.The chief minister added that the President’s visit for the Meghalaya Games would encourage the youth and participants.The Meghalaya Games are scheduled to take place from January 15 to 20, during which over 3,000 athletes will compete in 22 disciplines. Traditional games of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo indigenous communities will be included in the Meghalaya Games for which the state government has allocated over Rs 23 crore. On the other hand, among several programmes on January 16, the President is scheduled to lay the foundation for the Shillong Ropeway project, a source said.Earlier on July 5 last year, Murmu was in the state capital as the presidential candidate of the NDA, of which the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) is a constituent, to seek support for her candidature ahead of the July 18 presidential polls.

Meghalaya rebel outfit pulls out of peace talks with Centre and state

The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) of Meghalaya has withdrawn from peace talks with the Centre and the state government due to a deadlock on "fundamental issues". The outfit's chairman and commander-in-chief, Boby Marwein, and general secretary-cum-publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw expressed concerns that if these fundamental issues are not addressed, their political demands will be dismissed. The HNLC was recently in the news for issuing a death threat to an MLA over the closure of a state-run cement company. The outfit's demands include revoking the banned status and withdrawal of pending cases against its cadre.
