Pine City sees surge in count of visitors

Shillong: The city of pines and orchids is experiencing a surge in visitors during Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations, with tourists arriving from across the country, particularly from Assam and West Bengal, as the city sparkles with decorations.
“Like it was during the just concluded Durga Puja, almost all hotels, home stays and guest houses in the city and its outskirts are fully occupied with tourists from far and near coming here to spend their vacation,” says the manager of a new guest house at the Lachumiere locality of the city.
Local taxi services are actively transporting tourists to various attractions within the city and across the state.
“People have been making a beeline for Mawlynnong Village, reputed for its cleanliness and the living root-bridges,” says Daniel Kharpran, a local cabbie. “The Indo-Bangla border town of Dawki in the Jaintia Hills has also become very popular with tourists, who enjoy boat rides on the crystal clear Umngot River,” says Ranjit, another taxi driver, who informs that with the retreat of the monsoon, less number of tourists have been visiting Cherrapunjee, world famous for its showers.

Developed for Rs 5 lakh, it will assist tourists with their itineraries, promote local destinations and certified guides, and provide information on heritage walks and GI-tagged products. Plans are considered to open a similar centre at Trichy international airport.
