On Nat’l Space Day, NEC recalls progress in exploration & tech

Shillong: The maiden National Space Day was celebrated at the North Eastern Council (NEC) secretariat here on Wednesday, bringing together school students to honour the advancements in space exploration and technology, even as the event marked the significant achievement of the Chandrayaan-3 Vikram lander’s successful landing on the lunar South Pole on August 23 last year.Intermediate students from St Anthony Higher Secondary School, St Mary HS School, St Edmund’s HS School, and Brookside HS School took part in the one-day workshop organised by NEC. The event featured presentations from prominent scientists of the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC), who shared their expertise during the technical sessions.Som Kamei, planning advisor at NEC, delivered the keynote address, celebrating the Chandrayaan-3 Vikram lander’s historic achievement and highlighted India’s ongoing contributions to lunar exploration and the progress made by ISRO. Reflecting on India’s space journey from the launch of Aryabhata in 1975 to recent successes like Mangalyaan and Chandrayaan missions, Kamei emphasised ISRO’s commitment to advancing knowledge and innovation.In his inaugural address, SP Agarwal, director of NESAC, discussed the theme of National Space Day 2024, “Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga”. He provided insights into the history and development of India’s space programme and lauded Chandrayaan-3’s accomplishments, including its successful soft landing and lunar roving.“These achievements will support ISRO’s future interplanetary missions and enhance lunar exploration through rover deployment and scientific experiments,” he noted.During the technical sessions, KK Sharma, group head of NESAC, dwelt on the societal benefits of the Indian space programme and addressed the application of geospatial technology for effective governance in the northeastern region.

The Public Art Project of India (PARI), launched by the Ministry of Culture, aimed to enhance public spaces by showcasing art that reflected India's cultural heritage. Over 150 artists contributed murals, sculptures, and wall paintings around Delhi. The initiative featured notable installations like the Kalpatru Tree and the Sachi Torana gateway, emphasizing themes of nature conservation and women's empowerment.
