Shillong: Meghalaya on Wednesday paid rich tributes to its legendary patriot, U Tirot Sing Syiem, on his 189th death anniversary. The central function was held at the U Tirot Sing Memorial at Mairang, 40km from here. Mairang was the erstwhile capital of Nongkhlaw, of which U Tirot Sing was the Syiem (chieftain), reports Manosh Das.
“Better die an independent king than reign as the vassal” — these were the immortal words of U Tirot Sing, the chief of Nongkhlaw who took on the might of the British and achieved martyrdom in his endeavour to defend the freedom of his country.
On February 16 this year, the Meghalaya govt unveiled a life-size statue and bust of the Khasi freedom fighter at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre of the ICCR in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where a function was held on Wednesday to pay homage to the martyr.
