Meghalaya power outages on, restoration underway
Shillong: Power outages continued in the state, including Shillong, despite efforts by the department of power to restore electricity. Power cables have been snapped, and electric poles have fallen due to the relentless rain brought by Cyclone Remal over the last couple of days. While power supply was partially restored in certain areas in Shillong after a daylong cut, several localities remained in darkness on Wednesday. Water supply was also severely affected but has been largely restored in Shillong and other parts of the state.“We are also facing challenges in terms of power supply, and for that, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is working on a war footing. The damages are very extensive, but MeECL is working with large and additional manpower, and we hope that very soon power will be restored in most parts of the state,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma said on Wednesday.“The major part has been done, and in the next few hours or a day or two, we will see most of the power restored. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank the officials from the different departments, especially the district administration, for their hard work,” he told reporters.“At the same time, for the damage done in different parts of the state, especially to homes, necessary support has been provided. The district administrations have acted very quickly. A couple of days before the storm hit, we had a detailed review with our deputy chief minister and other officials, and we are very happy with how the district administrations have prepared and responded swiftly,” he said.“If there is any issue and people are facing specific problems, please contact the respective deputy commissioners, or call CM Connect at 1971,” the CM announced.Relentless rainfall across Meghalaya has led to significant destruction, including one death, landslips, waterlogging, damage to dwellings, uprooted trees, and snapped electric wires. However, the rain stopped on Wednesday morning, with normalcy gradually being restored.
