Rights body seeks report on ‘eviction’ drive in Shillong
Shillong: The Meghalaya human rights commission has directed the state chief secretary to submit a report on the eviction drive against settlers carried out by members of a pressure group in the Lum Survey locality of Shillong recently.
Secretary of the commission, in a notification issued on Saturday, said the human rights commission has taken a suo motu cognisance based on newspaper reports regarding the residents seeking help after they were evicted from Lum Survey.

The commission has also directed the chief secretary to submit a detailed report in this regard on or before May 30. Police already registered a case on May 23 against leaders of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council after they carried out the eviction drive.
“The case was registered at the Sadar police station against youth council president Roy Kupar Synrem, vice-president Donbok Kharlyngdoh, assistant general secretary Isaac Basaiawmoit, and several unidentified persons,” East Khasi Hills SP Rituraj Ravi said.
