Senior Congress legislators said that they would raise the issue of the “killing” of former general secretary of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Cheristerfield Lyngdoh, in police firing during a raid on his residence on August 13. The state government has set up a judicial inquiry into the incident which is yet to begin.

The Congress has also decided to move a resolution in the

Assembly

seeking the removal of Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh. The resolution, signed by four Congress MLAs – Zenith Sangma, HM Shangpliang, George B Lyngdoh and Kimfa S Marbaniang – was submitted to the Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on September 2.

This was informed by Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma after chairing a CLP meeting here recently. Terming it as a “conscious decision”, Sangma said, “…the details will be discussed in the August house...” Sangma also refused to divulge the reason behind the move and said that the issue will be taken up for discussion inside the House.

The ensuing autumn session of the

Meghalaya Assembly

will have six working days, with three days each allotted for government business and private member’s business.
