Meghalaya conducts cave evacuation drill

Shillong: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI) in Shillong and the District Disaster Management Authority (East Khasi Hills) jointly conducted a mock drill on cave evacuation at Mawmluh cave in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) on Saturday.The aim of the drill was to ensure prompt response by various teams and rescuers during a disastrous situation and check response and functionality of equipments and communication sets, a statement from the Meghalaya Adventurers’ Association said. The main trainers from the association have been trained in the UK and Ireland.“Prior to the day of the exercise, a session was held at the District Disaster Management Authority hall in Shillong with all stakeholders and participants, during which the association members briefed us on the roles and techniques of how to conduct a rescue operation in a cave in case of a disaster like earthquake,” an MAA member said.
