Shillong: Chief justice of the Meghalaya high court, justice S Vaidyanathan, highlighted the global challenge of disabilities on Tuesday, noting that at least one billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, with nearly 240 million of them being children.
He stressed the importance of safeguarding the basic
human rights of the differently-abled community and pointed out that various programs and policies are being introduced to support disabled children and adults.
“Given the challenges faced by children with disabilities globally, there is an urgent need to increase collaborative efforts to effectively implement commitments, combat the social stigma associated with disabilities, and address the discrimination that often leads to social rejection,” Justice Vaidyanathan said during his address at a consultation program on protecting children with disabilities. The event was organised by the Juvenile Justice Committee of the Meghalaya HC.
