SHILLONG: The Conrad Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government secured the vote of confidence of the legislative assembly on Monday while the House elected
United Democratic Party (UDP) president and former chief minister Donkupar Roy as the speaker of the 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Earlier on Monday, Donkupar Roy, who has been elected to the House for a record 7th consecutive term from his Shella constituency, was elected to the speaker's post as he defeated his
Congress rival Winnerson Sangma by 15 votes.
One vote was rejected due to technical reasons. In his thanksgiving speech, Roy assured everyone of maintaining neutrality while conducting the business of the House while all members, across all political affiliations, paid rich tributes to the veteran politician.
