Shillong: Meghalaya celebrated its 52nd Statehood Day at a programme held at the District Auditorium and Library in Tura on Saturday. Governor Phagu Chauhan and chief minister Conrad K Sangma greeted the people on the occasion.
Meghalaya was carved out of Assam on January 21, 1972 following a Hill State Movement during the tenure of Indira Gandhi as Prime Minister.
“I would like to remember and pay my respects to our leaders who fought for our statehood in a peaceful manner and we, as citizens, enjoy this freedom today because of their vision and sacrifice,” the chief minister said.
Referring to the development of the state, Conrad added that the state expenditure has doubled in the last five years, resulting in transformative changes in various key sectors like roads, health, education, sports and youth affairs.
Conrad further spoke on the special focus on farmers, women and youth of the state in several fields, including self-help groups, music, entrepreneurship and sports.
