Shillong: Meghalaya, which shares a 443km boundary with Bangladesh, has arranged for the return of students from the trouble-torn country, even as several of them arrived at the Dawki Land Port on the India-Bangladesh border on their own on Thursday.
As per reports, 198 students from India, including 67 from Meghalaya and 131 from other states, 101 from Nepal, seven students from Bhutan and four tourists have entered India through the Dawki Land Port since the clashes broke out in Bangladesh.
Meghalaya govt has activated helpline number 1800-345-3644 for its citizens who may require assistance due to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.
An official said, “Following the nationwide protests in Bangladesh and reported clashes between students and govt forces, the govt of Meghalaya is in constant touch with the Bangladesh high commission and the Indian high commission, Land Port Authority, Dawki and exporters’ association and has taken up all possible measures for the safety of these students.”
Additional SP (Jowai) Hiwot Rymbai (+91 96157 16153) has been deputed as a nodal officer at the border along with executive officer, Land Port Authority (Dawki), Thomas ( +91 84150 60802) as assistant nodal officer.
Meanwhile, in view of the situation in Bangladesh, the Indian community members and the Indian students residing in Bangladesh have been advised to avoid local travel and minimise their movement outside their living premises.
