Meghalaya okays new medical and housing ordinances

Shillong: Meghalaya cabinet, led by chief minister Conrad K Sangma, met at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills as part of the Cabinet on the Move initiative. They passed the Meghalaya Private Medical Institution (Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fees, and Reservation) Ordinance, 2024, and the Meghalaya Medical College Regulation and Admission into MBBS Course, 2024. The ordinance will take effect once signed by the governor. A regulatory committee will be notified to oversee fee fixation, reservation policy implementation, and seat allotment according to govt norms and court rulings. The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (PA Sangma Medical College) will begin operations following the governor’s approval. The cabinet also approved rules to regulate rental housing, govt quarters allotment, and the rental housing scheme for govt employees. This will enable the housing department to manage assets, evaluate needs, and create additional infrastructure as necessary. Additionally, the govt has relaxed the upper age limit for serving SSA teachers to 45 years for recruitment in government LP, UP, secondary, and higher secondary schools. The cabinet approved a loan from the Asian Development Bank for the Support Human Capital Development in Meghalaya – Phase II project. Ninety percent of the loan will be granted to the state and repaid by the Centre, with the remaining 10 per cent borne by the state.

Assault on medical aspirants: Regulate coaching centres

After a viral video of a coaching centre owner caning students in Tirunelveli, educationists in Tamil Nadu urge the government to regulate these institutes. Concerns are rising over the mental health impact due to long hours and high financial pressure. Recommendations include banning weekday classes and installing CCTV cameras in classrooms.

Governor bound by state cabinets decision: HC

Chennai's Madras High Court reinforced that state governors must follow state cabinet recommendations for premature prisoner release under Article 161 of the Constitution. This came after the Tamil Nadu governor rejected a state recommendation for convict Veera Bharathis early release, despite a co-accuseds release. The court remitted the application for fresh state review.

9 medical colleges under DMER radar for overcharging fees

The Directorate of Medical Education Research (DMER) has launched an investigation into complaints against nine Maharashtra medical colleges concerning development fees, institutional quota admissions, and fee concessions for reserved category students. Allegations include financial misconduct and exploitation of students. Committees will review admission processes and report findings to DMER for potential action.
