SHILLONG

: Senior United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Meghalaya cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh has been elected as the new legislature party leader of the party.

UDP, with eight MLAs, is the main ally of the NPP-led

Meghalaya Democratic Alliance

(MDA) government in the state.

A meeting of UDP MLAs was held on Monday night to elect a new legislature party leader following the demise of UDP president and legislature party leader Donkupur Roy. At the meeting, UDP leader and cabinet minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed that the MLAs of the party have unanimously resolved to elect Metbah Lyngdoh as their leader.

Lyngdoh will also be the chairman of the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), an alliance of the UDP and the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP), having two MLAs in the 60-member House.

Meanwhile, the People's Democratic Front (having 4 MLAs) an alliance partner of the MDA also formed the United Progressive Front to strengthen its alliance.
