Thousands join NE sammelan in Delhi

Shillong: A northeast ‘sammelan’ was held at the Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi on Sunday.
It was attended by Union minister for DoNER, G Kishan Reddy, Union minister for earth sciences, Kiren Rijiju, Union MoS for DoNER, BL Verma, Union MoS for social justice and empowerment, Pratima Bhoumik, Union MoS for external affairs and education, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, MPs and MLAs and officers from the northeastern states besides 1,000 more people, including students from the region studying in Delhi.
On the occasion, the ministers virtually laid the foundation stone of the North Eastern Cultural and Social Institute in Dwarka and inaugurated the Barak Hostel at JNU in New Delhi.
The construction of the Barak Hostel at an estimated cost of Rs 28.675 crore, comprising 214 rooms for boys and girls along with modern amenities, is expected to enhance hostel facilities for the northeast students studying in Delhi.
Reddy said, “Over these 10 years, the Centre has spent Rs 5 lakh-crore on the development of northeast. The region has witnessed the establishment of state-of-the-art cancer hospitals with a special focus on healthcare needs of the people, which will enable them to avoid the hassle of travelling outside and avail top-notch facilities in the region itself.”
Verma said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underscored the crucial role of the northeast in the nation’s development. This emphasis signifies a dedicated commitment to uplifting the region, especially commending effective governance and initiatives for ‘Ashta Laxmi’ regional development.”
Rijiju said the council of ministers make monthly visits to the region to monitor the progress of schemes on the ground and underscored the vital link between peace and development. The ‘sammelan’ featured special videos showcasing PM Modi’s roadmap and vision for development of the NE.
