Shillong: Cleanliness drives were conducted across the state to mark
Gandhi Jayanti on Wednesday. The Raj Bhavan in Shillong witnessed an unprecedented influx of visitors early in the morning as runners of various age groups arrived to register for the 5.5 km “Swachhata Run” under the “Swachhata Hi Seva” banner.
The Raj Bhavan and Central Bureau of Communication, in collaboration with the District Sports Office, East Khasi Hills, Government of Meghalaya, hosted the “Swachhata Run”, which attracted over 1,500 participants from Shillong.
Governor CH Vijayashankar flagged off the “Swachhata Run” to promote cleanliness awareness. Following the run, a tree plantation drive titled “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” was held, during which the governor planted saplings at the iconic Ward’s Lake. Furthermore, the governor launched a mobile library of the National Book Trust, which will travel to remote, rural, and difficult terrains in the state.
In a social media post, CM Conrad Sangma said, “Bapu ji’s ideals are relevant especially in the times we are living now. May we draw inspiration from his life and practice non-violence, harmony and peace.”
The BSF Meghalaya Frontier organized a cleanliness drive to commemorate the day as part of the “Swachhata Hi Sewa” campaign.
