For legislators, Constitution is the Bible: Meghalaya Chief Minister

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Tuesday sought to compare the Constitution of India with the Bible, urging the legislators and members of the autonomous district councils to follow the Constitution while discharging their duties to avoid conflicts.

Sangma was replying to a motion moved by Mawsynram legislator P N Syiem, who is also the Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, asking government and ADCs to adopt a mechanism to create a cordial relationship in the interest of the people.

"Like all faithfuls we follow the Bible. As legislators this is what we have to follow... the Constitution of India," Mukul said.

"We should follow nothing else. If we deviate from this, there will be conflict," he said.

The Chief Minister and the CEM are at loggerhead after the Congress-led government passed a law that restricts a legislator to hold two elected offices in the state.

While seven legislators had resigned since the new law, Syiem is the only person who challenged the Bill in the High Court.

"We are all guided by the Constitution. As a lawmaker nobody can deviate from the mandate and provision of this Constitution. I appeal to all friends, representatives of various constituencies of ADCs and ECs and CEMs to move ahead together and be guided by the provisions of the Constitution and respect it," the chief minister said.
