Finish inspection for expansion of Shillong airport: HC to AAI, govt

Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court asked the state government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to complete the inspection of Shillong Airport for extending the runway within the next couple of months.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice B Bhattacharjee on Monday while hearing a PIL said AAI has informed that a cost estimate for carrying out the feasibility of extending the runway at the Shillong Airport at Umroi town has been submitted to the state and the state is yet to respond.
“It is hoped that the AAI and the state work out the modalities and complete the necessary inspection within the next couple of months,” the bench said while directing that the matter will appear after 10 weeks. PTI

HC directs continuous monitoring of 150-yr-old banyan tree, joint inspection of site within a wk

The preservation of a 150-year-old banyan tree in Old Delhi will be monitored by the forest department and other agencies, as directed by the high court. The tree had been damaged due to construction but was restored. The court ordered the local tree officer and MCD to periodically inspect the tree and take necessary action to ensure its preservation. The court took note of the steps taken to secure the tree and ended its monitoring. The tree is estimated to be 140-160 years old.
