Khasi Hills comes alive with Nongkrem dance festival

Shillong: Nongkrem dance was performed amid pomp, joy, and religious fervour at the scenic hamlet of Smit, the headquarters of the Khasi state of Hima Khyrim, 20 km from Shillong, on Tuesday. The annual festival is celebrated during autumn at Smit, the cultural centre of the Khasi Hills. The five-day-long indigenous religious festival of the Khasis, Ka Pomblang Nongkrem, is popularly known as Nongkrem Dance, performed in honour of Ka Blei Synshar for a bumper harvest and the prosperity of the people. The Syiem (King) of Khyrim, along with the high priest, performs the Pomblang ceremony. He offers oblation to Lei Shyllong, the god of Shillong peak, by sacrificing a cock. An important part of this festival is Pomblang (sacrifice of goats). Then, offerings are made to the ancestors of the ruling clan. Religious part of the festival precedes dances, in which unmarried girls in all their exotic costumes participate.

Bihar concluded its Chhath Puja celebrations with devotees across the state offering morning prayers to the rising sun. Other prominent figures, including Ashok Choudhary and Chirag Paswan, also observed the rituals.
