SHILLONG: Campaigning of political parties have peaked in Meghalaya which is all set to vote in the first phase of the general elections on April 19 to elect MPs for the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats.
Party candidates are holding election meetings in the state capital and elsewhere to garner support in their favour.
Chief minister Conrad K Sangma, who is also the president of the National People’s Party (NPP), has been on a hectic campaign trail across the state to drum up support for sitting Tura MP and his sister, Agatha, and his cabinet colleague Ampareen Lyngdoh for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
Incumbent Shillong MP Vincent H Pala of the Congress has been campaigning hard to retain his parliamentary seat for the fourth consecutive term.
On the other hand, since the co-ordination meeting last month between the two NDA partners in the state, BJP ‘karyakartas’ from every district of 1-Shillong constituency are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the victory of its ally (NPP) from the Shillong seat.
A party statement said over 10,000 ‘karyakartas’ have pulled out all stops to ensure that Meghalaya contributes its representatives in the NDA govt led by PM Modi, which “looks set to return for the third successive time, as predicted by every opinion poll over the last few months.”
As campaigning date comes closer to the deadline, the enthusiasm and eagerness to organize meetings have hit a fever pitch. BJP legislator Sanbor Shullai held a series of meetings at Kenches Trace, Laban and the cantonment area in the city, urging party supporters to cast their votes in favour of the NPP symbol during these elections.
Earlier, Meghalaya BJP ST Morcha campaigned for Shillong constituency’s NDA candidate Mavel Ampareen Lyngdoh at Nongrang and Thangmaw villages in Eastern West Khasi Hills district.
Meetings were also organized at five mandals under Ri-Bhoi district in support of the NDA candidate and similar mass gatherings took place in at East Jaintia Hills district as well.
The OBC Morcha of the BJP also organized an election meeting, along with State BJP Mahila Morcha and BJYM, at Nongpoh, the headquarters of Ri-Bhoi district.
