East Khasi Hills DC meets village bodies, backs ‘catch the rain’ drive
Tamil Nadu rain: Release of surplus water from Chembarambakkam and Red Hills reservoirs increased following heavy rainfall
The Water Resources Department increased the release of surplus water from Chembarambakkam and Red Hills Reservoirs due to steady rain in the catchment areas. The inflow to the reservoirs has significantly increased, prompting the decision to release more water. The authorities will continue monitoring the rainfall to determine further actions. The district administrations of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur have advised residents living near water bodies in low-lying areas to relocate for safety.
Water from Puzhal lake enters northern suburbs
The downpour spared Mudichur from water-logging. Excess water released from Puzhal lake affected northern suburbs. Smaller waterbodies in the south and western suburbs overflowed. Puzhal lake received 117 mm of rain. Theerthagiriyampattu, Vilangadukuppam, Vadaperumbakkam, and Samiyarmadam also suffered inundation.
Falling water levels in river basins worry CWC
The Central Water Commission (CWC) has warned the central government and states about the record low water levels in reservoirs across the country. According to the CWC, 150 reservoirs in India have reached their lowest ever water levels, with the Krishna and Penna river basins being particularly affected. The CWC report reveals that the reservoirs in southern states have only 48% of their total water capacity available. Last year, the water levels were at 92% during the same period. The CWC has urged the government to implement alternative plans to increase water levels, especially in the Krishna and Penna basins in Andhra Pradesh.
