SHILLONG: Joining the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in celebrating its 75th anniversary, chief minister Conrad K Sangma flagged off the NCC’s northeastern region car rally from the U Soso Tham Auditorium of the State Central Library on Monday.
“I would like to thank and congratulate the NCC for their tireless efforts in nation-building through personality development and by instilling core values of patriotism in our youth for the past 75 years. The initiative of a car rally is significant as it provides our youth an opportunity to meet people from other regions. This will expose them to different types of people belonging to various occupations, cultures, languages and ethnicities and would bring in national integration, unity, understanding and respect for one another,” the CM said.
A total convoy of 12 vehicles will traverse through all the states of the northeast except for Manipur due to security reasons and eventually end at Guwahati on NCC day.
Conrad highlighted various programmes of the government, including YESS Meghalaya which provides financial support of up to Rs 1 lakh to the youth for various programmes held in their communities.
The CM said his government has supported 3,000 such groups so far with the vision to reach about 10,000 groups soon and also highlighted the Meghalaya Grassroots Programme, which provides financial support and gives opportunities to local youth to perform at various locations, including important tourist landmarks, cafes, restaurants and important events throughout the State. “In Season One, we have financially supported 1,500 youths. And this year, we plan to double that and try to touch about 3,000 artists through the Meghalaya Grassroots Programme,” Conrad added.
“The event is a culmination of a collaboration of NCC and a diverse, enthusiastic collective group consisting of 277 schools, 151 colleges from 44 districts of six states. The main aim of the car rally is to foster camaraderie among the youth, inspire them towards leadership, and instil a deep sense of patriotism. The celebration is to personify unity, leadership and patriotism, all in the spirit of NCC’s values,” an official statement said.

Major General Yogender Singh has assumed the role of Additional Director General NCC in Maharashtra, taking over from Major General YP Khanduri. Singh, who joined the Indian Army in 1988 through UPSC, was commissioned into the 5th Battalion of the Brigade of Guards. Major General Khanduri retired after serving in the Army for over 35 years.
NCC deputy director general holds interactive session with cadets
The Tamil Nadu Air Squadron Technical NCC in Salem organized an interactive session with the deputy director general of NCC Directorate of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The DDG spoke about success and encouraged the cadets to join the armed forces. Over 1,000 cadets attended the session, which enhanced their understanding of discipline, leadership, and personal development. The session also provided an opportunity for the cadets to connect, grow, and learn. Appreciation certificates were given to the best performers, instructors, and NCC staff.
Major General Yogender Singh takes charge as Maharashtra NCC additional director general
Major General Yogender Singh has taken charge as additional director general, Maharashtra NCC, replacing Major General YP Khanduri who retired after a career of over three and a half decades in the Army. Singh joined the Indian Army in 1988 and has held various command and staff positions, including serving in counter insurgency operations and participating in operations at the Line of Control and on the Western Front. He has also served in the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea and played a crucial role in mobilizing humanitarian assistance during natural disasters.
