Will BJP implement UCC in Meghalaya, asks Congress

GUWAHATI: The Congress has questioned the BJP whether the saffron party is planning to implement the uniform civil code (UCC) in Meghalaya, the hill state where Christians are in an overwhelming majority.
“The BJP’s demand for a uniform civil code throughout the country shows its majoritarian mindset and poses a threat to the unique cultural identity of the tribes of Meghalaya and other northeastern states.What is their stand with respect to Meghalaya and the other northeast states that have their own unique customary laws?” asked Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed, while addressing the media in Shillong on Thursday.
The Congress leader said BJP is an alliance partner of the ruling coalition in Meghalaya with NPP in the MDA government, but has only two MLAs. Still it behaves as if it “owns the state”, she said. BJP needs to respond whether it will pass the anti-conversion bill that was passed in Karnataka in 2022, she said.
