19,000kg of sugar seized in Garo Hills

SHILLONG: A huge quantity of sugar was seized from the Rongra bordering area in the South Garo Hills district of the state on Sunday.

“Based on specific information, BSF troops along with Meghalaya Police conducted a joint operation near the India-Bangladesh border. During the operation, more than 19,000kg of sugar was recovered from an abandoned house near the international border,” a spokesperson for the Meghalaya Frontier HQ of the BSF here said on Sunday.

The seized sugar was handed over to the Rongra police station, the BSF said.

Earlier on June 14, BSF had seized a large quantity of medicines and mobile phone displays worth more than Rs 73 lakh, which were meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh, in East Khasi Hills district.

BSF jawan attacked by intruders from Bangladesh, battles for life

BSF head constable Gokul Mondal was attacked by a group from Bangladesh at Dhantala in Nadia district. Mondal sustained serious injuries and tried to fire his Pump Action Gun in self-defence. BSF and BGB held a flag meeting after the attack. Mondal alerted nearby patrol parties. BSF mentioned adopting a non-lethal strategy with Bangladesh.
