14 Meghalaya nominees file papers; campaign on

Shillong: Altogether 14 candidates, including two sitting MPs, have filed their nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections in Meghalaya, which will go to the polls on April 19.The filing of nominations for the two Lok Sabha seats, Shillong and Tura, in this hill state ended on Wednesday, even as campaigning has been picking up.Ten candidates have filed their nomination papers to contest for the Shillong seat, including former Union minister and sitting MP Vincent H Pala of the Congress, who is seeking re-election for the fourth time.The BJP, a constituent of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance govt, is supporting the National People’s Party’s (NPP) nominee Agatha Sangma for the Tura Lok Sabha seat and lone woman cabinet minister Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh (NPP) in the Conrad Sangma ministry for the Shillong seat.The Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), an alliance between the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), has fielded Robertjune Kharjahrin from Shillong parliamentary seat.The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has nominated Ricky Andrew J Syngkon as its candidate for the Lok Sabha polls from the Shillong parliamentary constituency.Prof Lakhon Kma and advocate Peter Shallam also filed their nominations as Independent candidates from Shillong parliamentary seats.In Tura parliamentary constituency, Zenith Sangma, the brother of former chief minister Dr Mukul Sangma, who is sponsored by Trinamool Congress, former cabinet minister Saleng Sangma of the Congress and Independent candidate Laben Ch Marak have filed their respective nomination papers. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on March 28 while the last date of withdrawal of candidature is March 30.
