1 arrested with 6 crore heroin in Meghalaya

Shillong: Police in East Jaintia Hills on Monday busted an interstate drugs racket with the arrest of a suspected smuggler and seized heroin worth Rs 6 crore from him.Police, along with THE anti-narcotics force, set up a checkpoint on NH-6 after receiving information that one Afjal Hussain Barbhuiya (32) was driving a tourist vehicle from Silchar to Khliehriat. The car was apprehended and 66 soap cases, filled with heroin, were found to be stashed inside the dashboard and the front bumper. Drugs weighing 643.81 grams and worth over Rs 6 crore were seized. The accused has been booked under the NDPS Act, reports Manosh Das.

In just 11 months, over 3,600 FIRs were filed, resulting in the arrest of around 4,800 individuals. The Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB) reported seizures of heroin, charas, Ganja, opium, and poppy straw, totaling over 30 kg. The highest number of cases were reported in Sirsa, Faridabad, and Gurgaon. The HSNCB also confiscated properties worth Rs 45 crore and conducted training courses for police officers. Efforts were made to support drug addicts in seeking treatment and raising awareness among youth. In 2022, the police seized 24 tonnes of narcotics worth crores of rupees and attached properties worth Rs 31.45 crore. The majority of drug abuse patients treated at PGIMS Rohtak were young adults between the ages of 20 and 30, with opioid use disorder being the most common addiction.
