Water level increasing in Mettur reservoir
SALEM: The water level in the Stanley reservoir in Mettur has risen further thanks to heavy rain in the catchment areas of the Cauvery river.
A senior water resources department (WRD) official said, “The water level rose one foot in one day.” The water level in the reservoir was 109 feet on Tuesday. It rose to 110.03 feet by Wednesday morning, with a storage capacity of 78.451 TMC.
The inflow to the dam surged to 12,812 cusecs from 9,683 cusecs on Monday night. “If the rain continues in the catchment areas, the water level could reach its full capacity of 120 feet within a couple of weeks,” the official said.
Currently, 1,000 cusecs of water is being released for drinking purposes. June 12 is the traditional date of release of water from the reservoir for kuruvai crop cultivation in the delta districts of Tamil Nadu.
