Two men fined 1.5 lakh each for smuggling 12kg sandalwood logs

Dharmapuri: The district forest officials on Saturday caught two men with 12kg sandalwood logs and fined them 1.5 lakh each. A forest officer said they were conducting a vehicle check on Nagar Kudal-Pandaalli village road in the early hours of the day, when they caught G Nagaraj, 53, of Papparapatty and V Saravanan, 40, of Pennagaram, trying to smuggle sandalwood logs.
“During inquiry, they confessed that they had chopped off a sandalwood tree in the reserve forest,” said Arun Prasath, Dharmapuri forest range officer.
District forest officer K V Appala Naidu later imposed a fine of 1.5 lakh each on the duo. "We have collected 3 lakh in total from the duo and deposited it in the government treasury,” Arun said.
