The arrested have been identified as school electrician R Govindaraj, 34, of Kakkan colony in Udaiyapatty, and supervisor A Muthu, 43, a resident of Industrial Estate near Five Roads.

According to the Veeranam police, G Roshan, of Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary School near Ammapet, drowned in the septic tank on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place when the boy was playing a game of hide-and-seek with his friends on the school premises during lunch hours.

Roshan went inside a store room that was not locked. The septic tank was located inside the room. The boy did not notice the open septic tank as it was dark inside the room and fell into it. Initially, the Veeranam police registered a case under Section 174 (drowning) of CrPC. On Friday late night, they arrested Govindaraj and Muthu for their negligence and alerted the case under Section 304 (b) (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
