Salem: An election flying squad seized a sum of about Rs 1.1 crore from a vehicle purportedly transporting cash for ATMs from a nationalized bank in Salem on Thursday.

The agency entrusted with the job of transporting cash has claimed that the money belonged to the bank meant to be loaded in the ATMs, but the officials have seized it as they failed to produce necessary documents. "If they produce the documents we will release the cash or else it will be handed over to the government treasury,'' said an official.

According to election commission officials, Salem collector D KArthikeyan received a tip off that huge sum of money was being loaded into a vehicle near Jagir Ammapalayam area in Salem South constituency.

He instructed revenue divisional officer C VIjayababu to check the vehicle.
