SALEM: A 21-year-old man accused of murder escaped from

police custody

According to Pallapatti police, A Madhan Kumar, 21, a native of Tirumullaivoil in Avadi near Chennai, was staying with his friends in

Hosur

in Krishnagiri district. He works in a private company in Hosur. On March 17, he consumed liquor with his friends Suriya and Raja in Samathuvapuram area.

In an inebriated state, the trio attacked K Magi, 28, in an attempt to steal money from him. Magi sustained serious injuries and died on the spot. The attackers fled with Rs1500. The Hudco police registered a case and arrested the trio. Suriya and Raja were lodged at Salem central prison while Madhan Kumar was lodged at Rasipuram sub jail in Namakkal district.

On Thursday, he was taken to Hosur sub-court to be produced before the judicial magistrate during trail. Armed police men Manikandan and Sudhakar were escorting him to Hosur. After producing him before the JM, the police returned to Rasipuram from Hosur the same evening.

It is learnt that the policemen got down at Salem Central Bus stand to take another bus to Rasipuram. During this time, the accused escaped. The police men chased him but in vain. Subsequently, they lodged a complaint with Pallapatti police. The police registered a case and further investigations are on.
