SALEM/KOTTAYAM:
Hadiya, a Kerala woman at the centre of a controversy,
spoke to her husband after several months on Wednesday.
“Hadiya talked to Jahan (her husband) for a while from my mobile phone, after I, as local guardian, asked her whether she was interested in talking or meeting anybody,” G Kannan, dean of the Sivaraj Homeopathy Medical College, told reporters.
The 25-year-old was brought to the institution in Salem amid tight security on Tuesday evening.
Earlier, when reporters asked about Shafin Jahan, Hadiya said she had no contact with him for the past few months as she did not have a mobile phone and the only people she spoke to were her parents.
“I am very eager to speak to my husband," said Hadiya, who was in the news recently after her conversion to Islam and marriage.
The dean said: "She appeared to be relieved from depression after talking to him (husband). There is no restriction imposed on her to talk or to meet anybody."
Stating that she has not given any application to change her name, he said she has applied on her earlier name (Hindu name-Akhila Ashokan
) for internship.
However, there was some confusion about where and with whom to send her during the college holidays, Kannan said, adding that the management will approach the apex court in this regard.
“For the past six months, I was talking to persons (parents) I did not like, because of their harassment during my stay with them-,”Hadiya told reporters earlier at the college, where she will be undergoing an 11-month internship.
Meanwhile, earlier in Kottayam, Hadiya’s father Ashokan K M said he would move the Supreme Court against the medical college for allowing the student to hold a news conference.
“I am preparing to file a contempt of court petition against the college,” he said.
Holding the college authorities responsible for facilitating Hadiya’s Wednesday’s interaction with the media, Ashokan questioned how a student, sent to college for pursuing her studies, could be allowed to hold a news conference.
“My biggest concern now is over sending my daughter to such a college. If the college can make arrangements to conduct a news conference what will they do tomorrow,” he asked. “I have no other way other than to approach the court. I have already initiated the necessary action.”
On the statement of Jahan that he would meet Hadiya at Salem, Ashokan said nothing regarding it was written in the court judgment. “I don’t understand. Is my daughter a showpiece,” he asked, but added that he has not decided on whether to move the court against Jahan.
Ashokan and wife Ponnamma returned from Delhi to their residence at T V Puram near Vaikom on Tuesday evening.
