KRISHNAGIRI: Personnel at the Kelamangalam police station in Krishnagiri district have urged the state govt to demolish the dilapidated and unused quarters and construct new ones for them. The Kelamangalam police station was opened in 1915 during the British rule. Residential quarters were built for a sub-inspector and eight policemen in the 1980s. A new police station was built in 2009. The quarters are now in a dilapidated condition, overgrown with plants and bushes due to lack of maintenance and use. The quarters also became a habitat for snakes. "We are living in rented houses because the quarters built for police personnel are in a dilapidated condition. Due to lack of facilities, many of us have left our families in our native villages in other districts and stay in rented houses here," a policeman said.He said despite repeated requests for new quarters, no action had been taken thus far. The personnel urged chief minister C Joseph Vijay to intervene and take steps to construct new quarters for them.
