SALEM: Goods and raw materials worth around Rs 50 lakh were destroyed in a fire that broke out in an incense sticks manufacturing unit near Seelanaickenpatti bypass in Salem city in the early hours of Thursday.
The unit is owned by M Nazir, 52, of Seelanaickenpatti. No one was present on the premises when the fire broke out. The unit employs around 40 people.
Residents who noticed the blaze, alerted the fire and rescue services department. Firefighters battled for about three hours to bring the blaze under control.
The Kitchipalayam police registered a case. Initial investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an electric short cut in a machine that heats and dries incense sticks.
